I'll write more later and share some photos, but quickly, she's a remarkable, kind, generous woman and it was a transformative couple of days (I think). She's everything you'd hope one of your favorite artists would be.

Took a little bike ride down to Coney Island yesterday. By the time I
got down there I was tired and hungry and my hands were lazy and the
TI that was blasting in the park behind me limited my Cyclone drawing

One more day in France. Soon to hop on a train to Paris, or so I thought. Everybody seems to be sleeping still. It's a rainy day in the country... I might just try to enjoy that.

In going to wait to post my project until it's done in a couple weeks. I had a great, tough critique yesterday from wade and the other artists. I've been searching for this thing it's going to take for me to get to this next level and I think all the information is there now.

I actually wish I could spend the day painting, but dry time won't allow. I thing I might be making a big switch to pastel. Seriously. It's not just for kids anymore.

Only 3 days of France left! One of those days being a painting day,
one a crit day, and one free in Paris. Spent the day down in Paris
once again today with Amber from the residency. We hit up Palais de
Tokyo / Musee d'Art Moderne for an amazing contemporary exhibition DYNASTY. So much
inspiration. Most definitely one of those life-changing art
experiences. One of these days I'll parse through all my museum
photos and get them uploaded.

There were some brilliant art blurbs alongside the work, particularly
the bad work. My favorite (and I'll be using this in my midterm
crits, thank you) was "situating his painting method in an underground
faction of art history where pleasure and irony reign in unison."
This is the best way I've ever heard to rationalize painting
cheeseball paintings (in this case, bunnies).

It's been raining every day here for most of the trip, but a few of us managed to find a dry morning to explore Monet's gardens. They were breathtaking and tourist-filled - an odd experience. The inside of his house was filled with quality Japanese woodblock prints including about 20 from Hiroshige and Hokusai, which was of great interest to me as they inform the linear and spatial qualities of much of my work.
Crits with Wade Schuman monday. I'll be back with some images.

Firstly, sorry Wade about your nose. The train was a bit bumpy and you kept moving.
It was a full day. Train ride into Paris, a full day at the Louvre with Wade as guide, some Pigeon theatrics at lunch overlooking the pyramid, a late train back, a couple hours in the studio, a quick absinthe tasting, and then back up the hill to watch the meteor shower. With our first critiques coming up on Monday, it's going to be a long weekend in the studio.

I'm loving Barcelona on my second day here. I could definitely live here, which I could not say for Madrid. There's an amazing energy to the city, art everywhere, and so much to explore. Splurged a bit on lunch at Tapas 24 and ate a McFoie burger with truffle mayo. Also a jamon iberico croquette, some tomato bread concoction, and a cerveza.

The Picasso museum was good, but more centered on his early works, which was interesting but not too inspiring. None of his great stuff, but I can't complain having just seen guernica in Madrid and having some important pieces in NY. I'd definitely suggest the Picasso museum in Paris over this one as it has a more comprehensive survey of his work. That one blows my mind.

I recall that quote by Daniel Parkhurst in the opening of Juliette Aristedes' Classical Drawing Atelier, and it's always stuck with me. Radiolab this week posted a short conversation between Malcom Gladwell and Robert Krulwich called Secrets of Success in which they skim the surface of success, talent, genius, and passion.

It's an interesting listen for all us artists, but relates to any field. Talent=Love has always been my feeling on the subject. If you're not already a Radiolab listener, and you're any kind of nerd (like me), you should check it out.

Re-investigating this painting at a smaller scale for a commission. It's been interesting giving this image another go, knowing more about color, structure, physics, and knowing it's not really what I'm about these days. It's actually been much harder this time around.

However learning to paint in some middle ground between direct and indirect changes everything for the better regarding the integration of the face, the reflections, the clouds.

The studio is getting hotter, stuffier, and more difficult to paint in every day. It's a brick oven with no windows and liquin fumes in the air, but fortunately after this piece I'm going to be moving out for the summer. It's going to be a world apart from the residency in a few weeks painting under the cerulean sky in the French countryside.

There's another funny project I'm tacking onto the trip as well. I'm calling it slow-blogging.

I picked up a new little camera from the interweb, just delivered
today. And also a remote for my fancycam, just delivered today, so I
can get to work on some stop motion/time lapse projects in my dungeon-
like new summer studio.

This is from drink and draw last night. $10 for a nude model and all
you can drink pbr. It was packed and 90 degrees, the beer was no
cooler than the sweat dripping down my face, but all good fun.

Yesterday I received word that I was awarded a 2 week residency in Giverny, just outside of Paris, along with 7 other classmates. I'll go into my proposed project sometime when things settle down a bit, but it has to do with the way that memories are fictionalized slightly each time they're recalled. I'm really beginning to lean toward a more conceptual / experiment-based direction in my work for next year, with painting as the application. I've always been a bit of a science nerd and have been battling with how to incorporate that into my work, so it's exciting to see these openings.

We're in the final stretch, less than two weeks left in my first year of the NYAA MFA program. I have about 150 sq feet of unfinished paintings to paint. The content is all over the place from figure study to large character paintings to small figurative paintings with imagined elements and light, but I'm feeling pretty good. None of it is what I see myself continuing with next year, but at least I recognize that.

4 weeks into a 6 week pose. The space on the right was originally a gaping white wall, however during the Tribeca Ball last week they installed a sort of horrible rendition of Manet's "Lunch on the Grass" or something like that and it saved my composition. Cristophe and Liliana are amazing!

This is mostly a technical painting for "Painting from Imagination" class. The assignment rules were 1 figure, 1 indirectly lighted area, 1 direct light. We're allowed to use 2 references, but I'm just using 1 for the figure and changing the light on her anyway. In the end she's hopefully going to look sun-charred, grossly red.
